Precious Plastic Kisumu, calling for volunteers!

Starting in January 2026 and continuing for over a year, Digijeunes will be involved in setting up a Precious Plastic facility in Kisumu, Kenya, in partnership with the local organization Bright Future Kenya. The goal is to establish a plastic recycling center at Obede Primary School, based on the open-source Precious Plastic model. Once the center is fully operational, two local young people will be employed to manage its daily activities.

The Precious Plastic Kisumu initiative will focus on designing and producing useful items from recycled plastic waste, which will then be sold locally. We believe this project will bring significant benefits to the community by improving access to certain plastic-based goods that are otherwise difficult to source in some parts of Kisumu. Additionally, it will raise awareness about do-it-yourself recycling practices and contribute to youth employability, both through direct employment and through hands-on workshops that build practical skills.

The Precious Plastic Kisumu initiative is co-financed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

We are currently seeking volunteers to join our initiative—particularly those interested in traveling to Kenya with our team to help implement the plastic recycling facility. Practical tasks consist in installing the machines, running tests, setting up 3D printers, cnc routers and computers. It also involves building furniture to accommodate for the machines and for a boutique shop.

Ideally, volunteers should have a background in science or engineering, or at the very least, practical skills in areas such as electricity, mechanics, electronics, digital fabrication, or computer-aided design.

We will cover all costs related to accommodation and meals. However, flight tickets will be at the volunteers' own expense.
